Your broadcaster's Email Address Matters

Submitted by Jerimee on February 23, 2012 - 11:05am

Content created with helpful advise from NationBuilder and from their post on how to optimize email deliverability.

When you are getting ready to send emails from your NationBuilder site here are the first things you have to do:

  1. Custom domain on NationBuilder. So, mydomain.com instead of mydomain.nationbuilder.com. Here's how.
  2. Set up emails on your custom domain. Like jerimee@richiroutreach.com matches to www.richiroutreach.com. This is done through google aps. Instructions here.

Embedding Content on Nationbuilder

Submitted by Meredith on February 23, 2012 - 5:22pm

NationBuilder makes it easy for users to add media content from sources like Youtube and Flickr to their webpages. Simply copy the url for the video or photo set you’d like to feature, and paste it in the “Content” portion of your page. We made a few screencasts to help you figure this out here and here.

If your url is not recognized by NationBuilder, or you'd like more control over your content, you can also use an embed code to add your media. To do this, you'll need to edit your page at the Template level. Copy your embed code and go to the "Template" tab of your page. Paste your embed code beneath the {{ page.basic.content }} liquid tag in the “text-content” div of the basic page template. Watch the video below to see how its done.

Love Wins in North Carolina (on a budget)

Submitted by Felicia W. on February 21, 2012 - 3:17pm

A small coalition of North Carolina families came together last weekend to fight against Amendment One, the proposed measure that would define marriage as between one man and one woman in the state’s constitution. With the help of NationBuilder and plain-old kitchen table conversations, about 20 families organized to hold a very successful fundraising event.

They decided to hold a dance party because "Too much of the anti-gay amendment debate has focused on fighting hate instead of celebrating the love bringing these couples and families together. A Valentine’s Day Dance offers the perfect opportunity to celebrate love and commit to working for justice."

Displaying a List of Content From Another Page

Updated 1/31/12

Have you ever wanted to have content from one of your webpages show on another page on your site? For example, perhaps you’d like to pull some of your blog headlines onto your homepage? Well, there is an easy way to print content from one page onto another on your NationBuilder website. In this post, we’ll walk you how to create this effect.

Throughout this task, there are 3 places you'll need to edit or refer to in NationBuilder:

  1. a new custom template, which will display the data the way you'd like it to transfer from one page to the other
  2. the page you want to pull content from
  3. the page you want to display the content on

Start by making your new custom template file. To do this, go to Pages> Theme > Custom Theme > New File. Name your template something like "_Blog_exerpts.html" - note the leading underscore and .html at the end. Then save the template.

Integrating Typekit with Custom Domains on Nationbuilder

Submitted by Meredith on January 26, 2012 - 2:11pm

NationBuilder

One of the custom theming options that NationBuilder offers its customers is an integration with Typekit. This means that you can use a handful of custom fonts such as Museo-Sans, Myriad-Pro and Lobster simply by plugging in the font name like “museo-sans-1” to your CSS style sheet. You can find more information about that feature here.

However, if you move your NationBuilder site to a custom domain, your Typekit fonts will no longer work. To fix this issue, you’ll need to set up a new account with Typekit.

To do this, start at Typekit.com and select “Register” in the upper right hand corner. It will then take you to their plan pricing page. Typekit offers a free plan with 25,000 pageviews per month, 1 Website, and 2 fonts per site. Don’t be deterred by the “Trial” name - it does not expire.

NationBuilder Glossary

Submitted by Jerimee on January 26, 2012 - 9:58pm

Sure enough, this info is now out of date.

NationBuilder bills itself as a Community Organizing System (COS) combining a website Content Management System (CMS) with a Contact Relationship Management System (CRM). This means that not only can you build and maintain a website with NationBuilder, but you can also use NationBuilder to organize your community of supporters or volunteers in an interactive database, managing your social media, action campaigns, face-to-face contacts, email, texting and more.

Nationbuilder is comprehensive yet easy to use, but, like all comprehensive pieces of software it contains it’s own unique vocabulary that can take a while to get used to. The people behind Nationbuilder have their own great resources like their FAQ page, blog, screencasts, and theming documentation.

Exclusion Queries and Advanced Listbuilding in NationBuilder

Submitted by Meredith on January 19, 2012 - 11:48am

Note: As of the March update to Nation Builder, this guide is no longer applicable. See this posts for the new method: http://www.richiroutreach.com/blog/exclusion-queries-and-lists-nationbui...

Note: "Exclusion Query" means searching for people who are NOT something. Not named Smith, not donors, not in the city of Springfield, etc.

One of the capabilities that makes NationBuilder so great is its list-building functionality. However, regardless of the platform, sometimes creating and refining your lists can be tricky - particularly when you’re trying to create a list that excludes a certain group of people, rather than filtering on an inclusion basis. Lucky for us, NationBuilder has tools to help!

The best way to build a list of people based on filters and tags is to use the “Cart” function, located under the “People” tab. The Cart is represented by a small red and white basket image to the right of the list dropdown menu in the upper right-hand corner of your window.

More Improvements to Nation Builder Look & Feel

Submitted by Jerimee on January 16, 2012 - 4:10pm

NationBuilder's long list of features just got better. The folks over there are constantly making improvements to their theming and this Sunday released an update about the improvements they’ve made recently.

Firstly, they’ve implemented an easier way to add a header image to your site. Before you had to make a custom theme and modify the HTML, but now all you have to do is go into Pages > Settings > Header image and upload your header from there.

Second, they’ve added a new Focus theme. This theme gives your site a distinct style by using a giant photo as a background image. Again, to do this before you had to make your own custom theme, but now, with Focus, you can have this customized look quickly and easily. To add Focus just go to Pages > Theme > Official themes. Once added you can try different photos by going to Pages > Settings > Background image.

Calendar Event Countdown Display with CSS

Submitted by Jerimee on January 11, 2012 - 9:07pm

I made minor modifications to the CSS provided here to style an event countdown ("Only 5 days until...") for HK Activists. The HTML is simple; we just need the selectors for the CSS to act upon. Some of the CSS is newfangled CSS3, and the display looks fine without CSS3 too.

The display has been (briefly) tested in the latest versions of Safari, Chrome, IE, and Firefox as of January 2012.

My result:

My HTML (note that "<?php print $daysuntil; ?>" should be replaced with your number or variable outputting the number of days left):
